PCI modem prevents login

I've been trying to install a PCI 56K modem on a PC with Windows
2000 which was previously using a network card connection to a
LAN. When I first plugged the modem in Windows detected it but
it seemed to take forever to install and hanged on completion.

Now whenever the system is booted up with the modem installed, it
never gets past the Windows log in, the screen just goes black
and it hangs again. With the modem removed it works OK. What's
the problem? I can't remove the modem from the system in
Add/Remove Hardware as it doesn't appear in the list. I can't
reinstall it because the system won't boot to let me!

Any help would be appreciated.

PCI modems are a mine field it uninstall it and use an external modem
hassle free and can usually be found for small change prices on ebay.

Either the modem is broken or you installed wrong driver, or
not all PCI slots in your machine have equal capabilities.
If you can take the machine to your local computer shop,
they will save you the hassle and fix it faster than I type this.
