PC slowness

I've been to these newsgroups for some time now trying to solve or at least
understand what's happening to my PC. I'm now trying this expert zone, though
I'm not one. Here it goes:

I've bought a new PC for me not 4 months ago. It's a Packard Bell, Pentium 4
2,9ghrz, 512mb RAM, 120gb HD partitioned into two for programs (10gb) & data
(110gb).

I used to have another one similiar in features and I've got loads of
programs & files that I had to pass from one to another. I did it using CDs &
DVDs, and I transfered a great load of things to it which took approximately
half the whole space. (maybe this bit is relevant)

But it's slowing down very fast and I've tried everything I know about to
try & restore its good performance. Here's a list of what I've done:

- defragged several times
- manage adware & spyware weekly
- delete internet files & cookies
- filtered some programs not to startup with windows
- empty bin daily
- take as much data as possible out of PC whenever it's possible (into DVDs)
- reboot it if too slow
- run antivirus every week (AVG free)
- tried other defrag systems (like norton speeddisk)

I'm not sure if buying more memory will change that. Some people have said
to me that I shouldv'e bought an AMD processor instead of intel... I really
don't know what to do. the only thing I think might have caused this was the
sudden load of things that I put into the pc as soon as it arrived. But I'm
not thinking straight anymore.

Can anybody please help me sort this out? I don't know what else to think...

Thanks a lot!
