pc shuts down, re-boots when trying to open windows xp home editio

pc shuts down and re-boots when trying to open windows xp home edition, this
started after doing a windows update on about Aug. 10/06. will not not run in
safe mode, only solution is system recovery to get pc running again but, have
to redo all the updates and cycle starts again. does anyone know which
update(s) may be causing this?

Recovery wouldnt cause all that,do you mean "repair" ....However booting to xp
cd,open recovery,type:CHKDSK C: /R Type:EXIT When its thru.
