PC or Network Card gets tired!

I have an XP Pro SP2 desktop that I occasionally back up files to a NAS
device from. However, after a while (5-10 mins) the connection to the router
is dropped. There is nothing wrong with the router or NAS as other PC's on
the network continue to use them fine.

The same problem happens maybe once a day when browsing the web and
collecting email and not transferring large amounts of data to the NAS. It
is as though the PC or network card can only cope with so much data before
throwing in the towel.

any suggestions?

TIA

Hi
It might be a NAS issue.
Many entry level NAS' units suffer from problems like this.

Thanks but I've tried this and the problem seems to be the opposite of what
you suggest - I .e it can't cope with large amounts of activity / data
throughput.

Perhaps the network adapter (NIC) is failing. NICs are very cheap so
uninstall the one you have and throw in a known-working one. If that
solves the issue, you're done.

Thanks Jack,

I might have thought that too had the NAS not continued to work fine for
other attached PC's and that I now get dropped connections to the router
even when the NAS is not being written to or even when its off. I think I
will try a new NIC to try and eliminate that.

Another cause of problems of this type is incorrect fixed wiring. This
usually arises because the person installing the wiring thinks, "It doesn't
matter if I follow the color-code or not, so long as all plugs/sockets are
the same" ... and they are WRONG about that!

as an update to this, I have now found that if I disable the connection and
than enable it using the network connections manager it works again. does
this give any more clues to what the problem might be?
