PC needs to start twice for monitor to go on.

I'm running Windows ME on a Gateway Performance 800 PC and I have to boot the
computer once and then let it run a minute, reboot again to get anything up
on the monitor, once that's done, it's ok and running normal. Although if
it's turned off, or rebooted after being used, then it will have no problems
with the monitor turning on and getting a picture. It's just when the PC has
been turned off and is cold that the PC needs to be booted twice before the
monitor will get a picture on the monitor screen. And it's not just the one
monitor, I've tried it on 3 different monitors and the same thing happens. No
picture until the second boot. What's the problem, has anyone else
encountered that problem too?
Thanks, attilathehun1

I am not sure why you posted in an XP group but that problem is one I
have on a PC with Win Me but it will probably disappear when I get
around to replacing the hard drive, which is faulty.

Try plugging your Monitor Power Supply to direct power sockets instead of via
UPS. A low power battery of your UPS can cause this problem.

I don't think that this problem has any link with the "Hard Disk" as said by
Alan.

Ok, with the spot that the PC is hooked up right now, yes, it's hooked up to
a UPS. But, at the office where I encountered the problem also there is no
UPS, just a surge protector. And the 3rd spot also has just a surge protector
or surpressor. I've heard it called a surge surpressor and surge protector.
Oh, ok I'll try straight into the wall socket. I just re-read your answer
RajKohli.

See if your Office computer or 3rd location Monitors are receiving supply
through UPS. Old 14" or 15" monitors receive supply through CPU back socket.
if so, then plug the monitors seprately in to wall socket.

If that doesn't help then please let us know the sizes of monitor and model
nos.

I'm not talking about the monitor being faulty. It turns out the PC no
matter
what monitor it's plugged into has the problem. I've used 3 different
monitors and all do the same thing when the PC is cold, or hasn't been
used
in a while because it was shut down. If the Gateway Performance 800 has
been
used recently and is still warm then I have no problem. The monitor comes
on
normally. Otherwise I have the problem of having to start it up and then
pull
out the power cord and then restart it. Then it works fine.
Thanks, Daniel

Have you tried turning on the monitor before turning on the computer?

If you have big monitors say 17" on your desktop and you turn on your PC
first and monitor later then this could be the reason. First, turn on your
Monitor first and then CPU. For instance, I have a 17" LG 700E Monitor on a
Celeron Machine. In the morning, sometimes when I turn on my PC first and
later the CPU then it just comes up with no display and when Monitor ask CPU
for display input then my PC just got restart and then shows the display. See
if you are doing the same.

Hope this help, let us know!

My monitors are always kept on, just powered down. Anotherwords, say after
30 minutes of no use the monitor will power down to where the LED is yellow,
then when I move the mouse or hit one of the keys on the keyboard then the
monitor LED turns green and the monitor comes on. I've always kept my
monitors on. I've heard some PC techs say to turn off your monitor when you
shut down your PC, but what's the use then of your monitor going into a power
down mode? Doesn't make sense! Maybe the first response is right from Alan
Edwards who said the hard drive is on its last legs.
So, to go over it again. It's not the monitor, it's the Gateway Performance
800 Desktop PC no matter what monitor is being used. Also, I always keep my
monitors on at all times. Sometimes I have them on Space mode and they are
always on, showing the Space theme. You know the one that's always running
and making sounds while your sleeping. Screensaver and never powered down.

Maybe Alan could be right on his place but according to my knowledge Hard
Disk has nothing to do with it.

Just unplug your Hard Disk and turn on your PC. What you will get atleast is
a POST screen or the same problem.

Do you get just a blank screen when you first turn on your PC? Look at the
top left corner of your screen. Check if there is any Cursor blinking. If so,
goto BIOS and check if there is any "Hard Disk Pre-Delay Mode" like setting
available and then set it to 5 secs. This settings alow your computer to wait
for atleast 5 secs. for hard disk to become ready because today's computer
are so first and sometimes they did the test so quickly and skip the hard
disk.

Hope this help, let us know!
