PC locks up after boot up briefly

B

Bryan

when I start up my pc it locks up for about 3 or 4 minutes just after
entering Windows. It didn't do this previously so something has changed and
it is quite annoying. I have run AdAware and Spybot but that didn't solve
the problem.

So far I haven't installed service pack 2 or any other updates to XP since
SP2. I got the impression that SP2 might cause problems.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be happening? TIA.

Try this: Start > Run and type in

msconfig

go to "Startup" tab and uncheck everything. Note that this will disable your antivirus software and your firewall if you use a third-party one. Restart normally. Does it go faster?

Hi Bryan,

Open up My Computer. Right-click on the Drive containing your operating system. Click Properties. Click Tools. Under Error-checking, click on Check Now. Place checkmarks in both choices. Click Start and click Yes. Reboot the computer when ready.

However, before you reboot the computer, use Explore and remove / erase / delete all possible leftover files and sub-folders of your \Temp Folders in your User Ids and in \Windows\Temp. Once that is finished, run Disk Cleanup on this partition. Reboot the computer.

After you come back from the reboot, run the Disk Defragmenter program.

Next, go to "Startup" tab again and check one by one untill you fin the culprit (or culprits). Do not discard anything, not even the antivirus...

ok there are 34 items in startup. It would be faster to do them in small
batches and then work out which is the culprit.
