PC keeps crashing

I am running WIn2000. PC has been working great until a few days ago. If I am
on the PC it does not shutdown/crash, however, of I leave it unattended for
long periods of time- even a few hours or overnight, the PC has completely
shutdown.

I have tried shutting down some of the applications hoping to identify the
culprit, but no luck yet.
Any advise on how to trouble shoot this is appreciated.
Thanks.

As always you'll want to check Event Viewer for errors.

Shutdown? Or crashed? If it has shut down, possibly it is a heat issue.
Your CPU fan may have gone bad or is going bad. It heats up, then shuts
down the computer for protection. Check the BIOS hardware monitor for this.
I've had this happen. Or it could be another hardware issue ... not
necessarily a software issue.

Otherwise, not much else to suggest without specific errors. As suggested,
check your Event Viewer and reply with any relavent errors listed.

It could be so many things. But it sounds like a hardware issue to me. Maybe
your CPU is overheating, maybe your RAM or MB is going bad. I had a similar
problem with my machine and finally traced it back to the cpu overheating. I
needed a better heat sink with a high quality heat transfer paste like artic
silver, this solved my problem.
Try cleaning out your machine of all the dust, make sure your fans are all
working.
