PC keeps crashing - Is it a driver fault?

I get the following error message.

Error code 1000008e, parameter1 c0000005, parameter2 bf8999ee, parameter3
f18eab78, parameter4 00000000.

I have re-installed windows and upgraded to SP2.

My PC behaved ok until about a month ago, when it started crashing, in
general with an error report saying 'Error caused by Graphics driver'.

I've got a mini-dump from the Event Viewer which may be useful.

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x1000008e
(0xc0000005, 0xbf8999ee, 0xf1954b60, 0x00000000). A dump was saved in:
C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini041905-02.dmp.

I can email this to anyone interested.

My machine is a Packard Bell IEXTREME9050
Pentium4 2.2 Ghz
512mb DDR
nVidia Geforce 4MX 440 64MB Graphics card
Columbia motherboard.

I have run hard drive and memory checks which report no errors.

I installed the latest drivers for the Grpahics card after the re-build and
started getting the errors. I rolled back drivers one or two versions until
things seemed stable.

Unfortunately its happening again now.

I hope someone can assist me as i am really at the limits of my ability to
sort this out :)

Hi Richard,

Can you send me your minidump and I'll look at it. The on eyou have now
might indicate the problem but the following instructions have a better
chance.

Steps:
1) Windows Key + R
2) Type in 'verifier' and hit enter
3) Make sure 'Create Standard Setting' is selected and hit next
4) Click on 'Select all drivers installed on this computer' and hit Finish
5) Reboot

There is a possibility that your computer will crash on reboot. If this
occurs hit F8 when rebooting just before the windows logo screen and select
the safe mode boot option. Follow the same steps above but on step 4 choose
'Select driver names from a list'; hit next; check the box next to any
driver where the provider is not Microsoft; hit Finish; reboot.

This will slow the performance of you computer a little while enabled but
will hopefully catch the driver causing corruption. Next time you crash
the blue screen will hopefully say something like
"DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION". If this occurs please send the
corresponding minidump (by default it is at c:\windows\Minidump ) my way.
If you have any questions or I didn't explain something well enough don't
hesitate to e-mail me (remove "online") back. Good Luck,

Hi Joshua,

Thanks v.much for your help.

I've emailed you the .DMP file taken after the last crash.

I'll try the verifier and send you any reports from it.

One question though, once the verfier is enabled how do i disable it later?

Richard

Hi Richard,

To disable it you just have to run it again and choose "Delete existing
settings" from the tasks and click Finish.
