PC is available on LAN but not visible in My Network

I have a 2 PC cabled home LAN and both PCs run XP Home

Both PCs can access each other's shared files fine, but the laptop's "My
Network" does not show the desktop. The laptop will "find" the desktop PC
when I search for it, and it can access the desktop's shared folders just
fine via desktop shortcuts I created for them. It is just peculiar that
when I go into its My Network and work down to my LAN's name folder, it only
shows itself there, but not the desktop.

It is more annoying that important but I am curious. This is something that
happened relatively recently. Previously both PCs showed on the laptop, so
something changed.

Any suggestions?

Yes:2

1. Did you change anything to your account settings ?
2. Did you change anything to your services (manual vs automatic,
start/stop, etc) ?

Yes, in trying to setup a wireless LAN. But I no longer remember what.

No.

Why not try doing a restore back to the date where everything was fine and
take it from there?

Well, do you use simple file sharing? If so, make sure the guest
accounts are active and remove all guest account passwords.

Just to be sure, check the 'server' , 'tcp/ip helper for netbios',
'network connections' and 'NLA' services. I am connected on a
network with both wire connected and wireless comps, and as far as I
can determine, you need these for everything to work.
