Hi, I have a new PC with XP Home installed and fully updated. We conect to
the internet via a dial up modem and after a few minutes work (this does vary
from instant to 10 mins after connection) the PC just freezes solid. There
are no error messages, it jst stops dead. We have to power off and restart.
When not connected to the web all works OK.

The only additinal software inatalled is Office 2003 basic and Norton
Internet Securtiy 2006.

Any thoughts please

Thanks

Nigel

Actually, it is not that easy to disable Norton. Uninstall it, and have a look
at what services it leaves running and the registry keys it leaves in, after
an uninstall! Now worry! Not good! Perhaps this may help :-

"To get RRWRUN.EXE to run without freezing the PC, turn off "Tamper
Protection" in the Symantec NAV settings. NAV 10.1 revamped the way tamper
protection works and this screws up RRWRUN.EXE. HTH,"

Another is to Uninstall Norton and Clean up all the Traces left behind for
it, but be careful what you are deleting!.
Scan for Malwares ( http://www.lavasoftusa.com and
http://www.safer-networking.org for Spybot S&D ) on your system, although
Norton is AV but not Anti-spware Programs, then when sure every thing is
clean and free do your tidy up form Disk Cleanup and Defrag after Runing this
command from the Run Command:
RUN >> sfc /scannow click [OK] and wait for it to finish you may
prompted to insert your XPCD, so get it handy to put it in for the System
File checker to repair any Core system file may damaged or corrupt on your
system.
Don't forget to install Norton or other AV to protect you from the wild
world web (WWW) <grin>.
HTH.
Please let us know.

nass
