P4 3.4 MHz 1Gb RAM. PC freezes after 2 mins then reboots itself. Tried
system restore but it won't turn the month back to Feb and the only restore
point available is yesterday the day it started. The BOLD dates don't appear
as a hyperlink. What could I try next?

Hi

Have a look in the Event Viewer for any 'errors'.

The applications and system sections are (as always) littered with errors -
where do I start?

The Security section is 99.9 success audit with an odd failure

Hello Trevor,

Your system is rebooting because it /has/ encountered an error condition. The default setting is 'reboot on error'.

Turn off automatic restart on error (which is the default setting in Windows. grrrrr )

Right Click the My Computer icon on desktop. Select Properties.
Next, select Advanced. Look for a block that says Startup and recovery. Review the settings in the System failure block.
Write an event to system log should be Checked (selected).
Automatically restart should be off.

Use a working pc and get a memory test utility, place on diskette, flash drive, (or portable media) and run it on the problem pc.
Run a RAM memory test. MEMTEST86 is one such utility.

Have switched off automatic restart. Have download memtest, but I'm no
expert and am struggling to see how it works.

The problem 'seems' to have gone away for the past hour and a half. I had
been using a sony psp attached via USB at the time.

I also wondered afterwards if the placing of the PSP betwen my wireless
mouse and its receiver might have been causing the problem?

As you were. It's back to freezing again.

I did wonder that so I checked with Everest. Last summer the cpu was going
over 100c, and I had to get Medion out and they replaced the fan.

The fan has been slightly noisier that it used to be, but on checking the
temp, the highest I could get it to was 65C (CPU)

Seems a tad on the warm side, but the CPU isn't the only thing that can
overheat. Graphics adapter memory and chipset are sporting heatsinks and
fans today. So open cover and inspect, clean, and look for cables
blocking air paths to fans. If it runs ok with cover off, it is
definitely heat related.
