pc card modem not working after upgrade to WinXP

I just added a new hard drive to my Dell Latitude CPi A
and then installed Windows XP Prof. (had Win 98
originally). Now I can't get a PC Card Modem (I've tried
2 different brands) to work. Windows recognizes the
modems (no problems indicated in Device Manager) and the
modem software reports a good install. I get
a "communication problem" when I try to dial and
the "Query modem" routine returns the "modem in use"
message instead of the list of normal responses. I'm
thinking it might be something in the PCMCIA interface,
but my network card works fine in the same slot. Will
appreciate any suggestions on how to resolve this problem.

Go to the Dell site..
Download drivers specified for your laptop with Windows XP.

If there are no drivers for the hardware you are trying to use, then they
likely are not fully supported under Windows XP.
