pasted text box always appears at top left of page

When I copy a text box or any other kind of autoshape (like arrows, etc), (I
use Control-C to copy), and then when I want to paste it (using Control-V),
the copied box or shape always lands on the upper left of the page. In some
Word docs, this doesn't happen, and the pasted item(s) land to the right and
a little down from the original item(s). Is this something that is
alterable? I don't want to have to keep scrolling to the top of the page to
get the items when I want them at the bottom of the page. Thank you.

All objects are anchored to text in some way. If you paste to a "blank page"
the object will be anchored to the empty para at the top of the page (IOW -
there's no such thing as a "blank page" - it must have at least one empty
para in order to exist in the first place).

Most likely the reason that "some" of what you paste winds up elsewhere on
the page is that those instances involve pasting to areas where content
already exists.

This is also dependent to a certain extent on whether you have
Tools>Options>Edit set to paste as In Line with Text (default in 2003) or to
some form of Text Wrapping. [Note: the setting & availability varies
depending on version of Word, which you neglect to mention.]
