Paste a slide as a link in a power point presentation (2007)

Hi,

I am looking for a way to paste slides from one presentation in other
presentation as a link, so that slides edited in the source
destination will be updated in the presentation where this slide was
pasted as a link.

Does anyone know if and how it can be done.

Katz,
You could select the slide, copy, paste, paste special, click on the radio
button paste link and hit OK.
Resize the object in the presentation so that it takes the complete surface
of the slide.
Of course if you open the presentation you would always get a message
prompting you to update all links.
Does that help?

I don't think you can do this by cut and paste.

If you use Insert > Object > create from file and tick link it should work.
The object should be scaled to full slide and given an animation of "object
actions" > show

Thanks for your replies !

I tried the Insert object and it did work. Is there a way, using this
option to choose specific slides or I will need to split my
presentation to few files?

About the copy paste option - I knew about it but the "Paste link"
option is disabled. I copied the slide from the presentation and tried
to paste it special and I only get the option to paste is as a slide.
Do you maybe know why is this option disabled?

Katz,
Works fine here with copy paste. Right click the thumbnail slide on the left
of the screen, copy, in the other presentation, paste special, paste link...
As I said you have to resize so it covers the whole slide.

Hi

I can get paste special OK too so I've no idea what the problem is!

I can't see how to get a paste special slide to animate but maybe I'm
missing something.

For me it sometimes works and sometime doesn't. I read the PowerPoint
help and it is mentioned there that the Paste Link is unavailable if
the document that you are attempting to link to has not been saved. I
tried saving it and as I wrote sometimes it works but it is not
consistent.
Strange.
I will keep on playing with it. Maybe I will find what is the problem.

I found the reason ...
The focus was on the thumbnail slide and not on the slide itself,
this is why the Paste Link option was disabled.

Yes.

Suppose you have two presentations, SlideLibrary and Real.
SlideLibrary is ... well, the slide library, the file you want to pull the
links from. Real is the presentation you're working on now.

Open Real, put it in normal view.

Open SlideLibrary, put it in Slide Sorter view.
Click the slide you want to link, choose Edit, Copy or press Ctrl+C

Switch back to Real.
Insert a new blank slide.
Choose Edit, Paste Special.
Click Link and make sure PowerPoint Slide Object is selected in the list box
(it will be by default).
Click OK.

Scale the inserted object up to fill the frame.

Save Real and close it.

From now on, when you open Real, it'll check for updates to SlideLibrary slides
it links to and will update itself.

You can also doubleclick the linked slide from within Real to launch
SlideLibrary, edit the linked slide and save. Now it's updated in both
presentations.

Pay no attention to the man behind that John curtain. ;-)

I still can't get the pasted slide to have animation.

With the Paste Link option, if I have animation in the pasted link the
animation won't work.
When I used the Insert Object option and then added the custom
animation -> Object Action -> Show, on the inserted object, the custom
animation in the added object did work BUT the object is not always
being opened when I press either the next arrow, the mouse or the
space ...
Still can't figure out when it works and when it doesn't.
Does anyone have any idea?

Ah.

Makes sense ... it's not a slide, it's an OLE object.

OK, I can get you a step closer, though still not perfect:

On a blank slide in the real presentation choose Insert, Object.
Choose Create from file, pick the Source ppt file and choose Link.

Size it and all that.

Rightclick, choose Action Settings and give it an Object Action of Play.

Now when you click the object during a slide presentation, the animation plays.

But since the slide object appears in its finished state, anything that
animates on shows up at first then goes away, then animates on while the object
is active then ... ugh.

So I think you'd need to put in a slide ahead of the "real" slide to act as a
preview, then give it an immediate transition to the "real" slide, and then be
prepared to do a few more clicks to get back to the parent slide show.

BUT IT ANIMATES. If you poke it between the right pair of ribs.
