A friend's pc went down the other day (first time shutting
down since Windows XP was loaded). When it came back up,
it said the password had expired. As far as he knows,
there never was a password. What can he do since he
doesn't know the old password?

While Windows is booting up keep tapping F8 until a
screen loads up asking you what you want to do. When that
happens, log in Safe-Mode and then enter. It by-passes
ALL windows passwords.

Open Control Panel go to Administrative Tools, open Local Security Policy
Then go to Account Policies, Password Policy, then go to maximum password
age and change that to zero.

Even though no password was set, sometimes the system sees a blank password
as a password, the above should resolve the issue. If your friend cannot get
to the desktop, it can be done from Safe Mode, boot the system, start
tapping F8, select Safe Mode, press enter and at Safe Mode, choose the
account named "Administrator," leave the password blank and press enter,
then perform the above steps.
