Password reset in a remote registry

I need to recomission an older laptop but have forgotten the password
I was using on the system. Unfortuantely, I can't run my password
reset utility because the optical drive doesn't read a disc. I took
the drive out and attached it to my desktop via a drive adapter cable
and can read the drive but don't know how to access its registry to
reset the admin password. Can anyone help?
The OS on the laptop drive is XP Pro. Money is too tight to throw at
this problem.
