password and hardrive

Dan

Hello all,
I have question . I pulled a hard drive out my lap top and put it in a
enclosure. I can read the folders and files fine except, One of the users
accounts was password protected.
So when I try to access the folder in documents of that account to read it.
I get a pop up that says access denied. I guess I either need to find a way
to change that folder to shared or pull the password protection off it. So
the question is, how do I change this folder so I can access it? The lap top
had XP Home on it. The lap top is dead but the HD works fine in the enlossure.

Thanks for you help. Dan

Dan,

What you need to do is to take ownership of that folder. Right-click on
the folder, choose Properties, select the Security tab, then select the
Advanced button at the bottom. Then select the Owner tab, you should be
able to take ownership there and then be able to access the files.

Another way is to stop at the Security tab and just add your account
there and give that account Full Control.

You need to disable Simple File Sharing and take ownership of the files. Take a
look at these articles for more info:

"Access is Denied" Error Message When You Try to Open a Folder

How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421

Note: If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you
must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an
account that has Administrative rights to have access to the
Security tab. To start in Safe Mode, reboot your computer and
start tapping the F8 key as soon as you see anything displayed
on the screen. Keep hitting F8 until the Advanced Startup
Options menu appears. Use the up and down arrow keys on your
keyboard to select Safe Mode. Hit Enter.

Good luck

The problem I run into is that since it is now a external hard drive in a enclosure (the laptop it came out of is dead) I does not give me those options. If I could boot from the external drive then mabe I could get that to work.
Any ideas?

Thanks, Dan

You need to do what Nepatsfan suggested on the working Windows install,
not on the install on the hard drive from which you're trying to get the
files. It doesn't matter that the files are on an external hard drive.

As Malke has pointed out, you run the procedure I cited on the computer where
you attached the laptop hard drive. You indicated that you could see the old
files and folders on the old HD when it was in the enclosure. What you now need
to do is take ownership of the files you can't access and give your account Full
permissions.

If the working computer is running XP Professional, go to Control Panel ->
Folder Options -> View page and remove the check mark from the box next to "Use
simple file sharing". Click OK. Go back to the external hard drive and right
click on any of the folders you can't access and select Properties from the
menu. You should now see the Security tab displayed. From here you can follow
the instructions in the articles I posted.

If the working computer is running XP Home Edition, you'll have to restart that
computer and boot into Safe Mode. Only in Safe Mode will you be able to access
the Security tab on the folders properties sheet.

Good luck
