Partitioning

Hi,

I have a laptop whith single hard disk (no partitions). I have Windows
XP professional installed on the same.

Now I want to create partitions using partition magic for the same. But
as soon as PM starts its work, after reboot, it says that Ërror 27,
drive is locked". I think thats because I have only one drive and
without partition.

How can I overcome this issue? My laptop does not have floppy drive
(nor can I get one).

Please advice.

Uninstall PM.
Disable your AntiVirus (Please - do not be connected to the Internet.)
Reinstall PM.
Try again.

You have a single hard disk with one partition.
Before an operating system can be installed, a drive must have a partition
and the partition must be formatted.

PM allows for partitioning in these kinds of situations, where the user can
resize the current partition, then create another afterwards.. There is no
need to to start all over, then make another partition. Why would anyone use
PM (or any other similar program) if they had to do that?

If PM is operating in the XP environment, most likely, resizing or doing
anything to the single partition that currently exists won't work.
PM boot media may work. Also be careful as some laptops have a hidden
partition required for some things. Some even have a hidden source
partition for restoration of XP to original install state.
Any PC or laptop making use of an OS on a hard drive has at least one
partition.

Tom,
The original poster stated twice that they no partitions on a drive with XP
Pro installed.
I didn't say that they had to start over. I said that they wouldn't have XP
without already having a partition.

Hi Ajay,

Best and safe way to do this type of Partitioning work is to do it in DOS
environment.

Secondary Partitions can be resized by Partition Manager even running in
Windows but not the Primary Partition, and that too in your case you have
only one Partition. I do not say it is not Possible but not the safest coz
if windows hangs in the middle of the Process, you will lose all your data
in the HDD.

Better have the Partition Magic (DOS version, available in the same PM
Folder installed in Windows) in a Bootable CD and boot from the CD (Hope you
have CD Drive in your Laptop). If your Laptop is with CDRW then you can
write a Bootable CD and Copy the PM for DOS folder in to it or any Service
Professional can create this CD for you. It is worth waiting till you are
equipped with this tool.

Hope this helps you.
