Partition won't Activate after diskcopy

I diskcopied a bootable partition to a larger partition and included
the unused space into the destination partition. Now, when I try to
boot into that partition, I get the WindowsXP screen, enter the
password, but then I get a message saying that it cannot verify the
activation of my software and am given the error code of Ox80090006 and
then it forces a new CTRL-ALT-Delete sequence. It never goes on to
allow me to reactivate the OS. How do I solve this?

I have found KB 310794, which is about a slightly different problem, but
suggests that if the disk letter assignment had changed, then I would get
this problem. So, I looked and found that the disk letters of the top-two
partitions had been switched. So I switched them around, back to the
original assignments, and rebooted. Still the same problem.

That KB article also suggests that the paths in some of the cryptography
keys might be wrong, so I should F8 into safe mode, and modify them.
However, it never lets in, even in safe mode. Is there a way to edit the
hive from another OS instance on the same disk?
