Partition Magic not finding all of my drive info - thoughts?

Hi-

I was trying to use Partition Magic to create a backup.

My setup (WinXP, all drives NTFS) is as follows:

First Drive:
180GB in 2 partitions: C: 75GB, D: 105GB

Second Drive:
E: 75GB

My WinXP boot is on C: (though I also have a Vista boot on D:) and I
wanted to copy the entire C: partition to E: to have a full functioning
backup.

But when I look at the partition map in Partition Magic, the drive
names are missing from C: and D: - the drives are fully functional, and
I can see their letters and access all files, but their names show up
as something like C: ?I? and D: ?OI - looks like rubbish characters.
And instead of telling me how much space is free on each of these
partitions, it says the used and total space are the same. If I look
at these in My Computer, the names appear normally, and the space usage
is accurately reported.

For E: (the other physical drive) all the information is correct,
including the name, and usage, in Partition Magic.

If I try to look at "Properties" on Partition Magic in C: or D:, I get
an Error #4444.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what's happening here, and/or how to
repair it?

I have a second issue about the actual partition copy but I am going to
wait until I get this answered and post that separately, because it's
actually a different issue.

Thanks!

You never gave a version for Partition Magic nor did you mention looking for
help on the actual product's web page/their support channels...

Have you contacted Symantec tech support?

to follow up...

it is partition magic 8.0
there was no info on symantec site regarding the subject - but running
chkdsk /f on both the partitions with the naming problem resolved the
name problem.

Glad it's fixed and thanks for posting back with the resolution.

This is a perfect example of why it's better to top post. How many zillions
of people have had to scroll down through all the history just to see that
the most valuable person rock is glad about something.

Or, tell me how to make new posts appear at the top instead of the bottom.
TIA.

Bottom posting is the norm in Usenet. I could have, and should have snipped
much of the post, though, just got a bit lazy. But let's not get into a
debate about top v bottom. In this newsgroup both are tolerated.
