You can run fdisk, create an appropriately sized partition for win98,
install win98, then either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts
and choose to install to the unallocated space.

I only want win2000 as an operating system but I want to partition 2
drives on the same hdd. Does windows2000 have the option in the
install cd to formatt the hdd?

Yes. W2k installer will let you delete/create/format partitions.
When you have done what you want, don't continue the install. Abort it
and restart it from boot. This will avoid unexpected drive letter
assignments.

I should also point out that during the second install, the installer
will not find an upgrade-eligible OS (or any OS) on the hard drive, so
it will ask you to insert an eligible prior system's CD. When it has
checked that, the installer will tell you to reinsert the W2k CD, and
will continue normally. Have that W98 CD ready if you use this method.

Dave,

O.K. so let me make sure I understand this process. I have an existing
6g hdd with win98 os. I want to install win2000 as the os and also
partition the 6g hdd into two partitions (c&d), 2 and 4 gig
respectfully. I insert the win2000 install cd and proceed. It will
allow me to partition the 6 gig into 2 & 4 gig partitions. At some
point it will prompt me for the previous os cd (win98) and once it
sees that will give me the option to proceed with the win2000
installation with the win2000 os on c and d will be free. Does this
summary sound correct?

The steps are correct. You would delete the current 6GB partition, then
create a 2GB and a 4GB.

You have a potentially serious problem. A 2GB partition is on the verge
of being too small for W2k. W2k may install OK, but you will sooner
rather than later find the 2GB system drive at capacity and the system
crippled. You would do much better to purchase a larger drive and add it
to the machine, then give W2k a 3-4GB partition. Use the remaining space
on both drives for apps and data in other partitions.

If the new drive is significantly faster than the current drive, put the
3 or 4GB system partition on the new drive, which would be installed as
master. The current drive becomes slave. Jumper the drives correctly
while you have the box covers off.

Thanks for all your help. I should start on this project probably
within the next couple of weeks. If I have any problems I'll post back
to this thread.

Can I do the same installing Windows NT cd installer? I have been
asking around and I think I want to partition to Wn NT instead of Win
2000.
