Partition harddrive

I'm using win xp and was going to install a new
harddrive. My question is do I need to boot to Dos
bootable diskette and type FDisk at the A: prompt in
order to partiton the drive? If I'm not wrong I guess I
could always partition the harddrive when installing the
win xp and doesn't need to use a bootable disk, could
anyone reconfirm this? Many thanks!

In win xp it has a program called disk manager its in
control panel/administrative tools/Computer
managment/disk managment. Just install the HDD and then
goto disk managment to partition it.

I have just put a new hard drive in my laptop and i used
EZ-GIG I didnt have any partioning because the original
drive was small. I have put a bigger one in and I need to
know how to partion it. It was a new drive so their was
nothing on it. Do I still have to format it? Do u know?

Hi, Eddie.
install a new
harddrive

Will this new drive be:
1. A second drive, with the original staying in place as the Master?
2. The only drive, replacing the original?
3. The new Master drive, with the old drive moving to Slave?

Since you didn't say, I'll take the easy way out and assume #1.

In that case, just install your additional drive, making sure the cables and
jumpers are correct. Then boot into WinXP and use Disk Management (type
diskmgmt.msc at the Run prompt) to create the partitions you want, assign
drive letters, and format them.

If the answer is #2, your best bet is probably to use Ghost or whatever
utility the HD maker supplied with the drive to move everything to the new
HD. Then remove the old drive and install the new one as Master.

If #3, follow #2, but leave the old drive out until WinXP on the new drive
is up and running. Then shut down and install the old drive as Slave. Then
use Disk Management to configure your HDs as you like, including
repartitioning and/or reformatting the old drive, if you like, and assigning
new drive letters.

In any case, you don't need to revert to MS-DOS. You don't need FDISK or
Format.exe. Boot from the WinXP CD-ROM to partition and format Drive C:,
and use Disk Management for any other partitioning and formatting chores.
(The one exception is the unlikely event that you want to continue to use
FAT32 on a partition larger than 32 GB. MS won't let WinXP format a >32 GB
partition as FAT32 (only NTFS), so you'll have to use the MS-DOS boot disk
for that, after which WinXP will happily use all of the partition.)
