partition hard drive

Dave

My XP PC came with a partitioned hard drive, with the operating system on
one partition. This would have been useful if I needed to reinstall the OS.
However, maybe I was lucky but never had the need to reinstall.

I now have a new PC with Vista Office on a 160 Gb hard drive. Everything on
on the C drive.

Is is possible to partition the drive now, or maybe is it worthwhile?

Thank you

Dave

Hi Dave,

Anything is possible. The question is if it is necessary.

Did the manufacturer give you recovery media? If so, then use of it in the
event of catastrophic system failure will likely wipe the drive and return
it to factory state. This may include removing any partitioning that you do.
So, storage of important data on a separate drive to prevent loss, one of
the main reasons for breaking up a drive, becomes an exercise in futility as
it may be lost anyways. Vista runs fine on one large volume, and backups
should be made to removable media to guard against loss.

Thank you for the quick reply
I had the PC built by a small local company, and they gave me a box of
instruction leaflets etc, and the Vista disc in a cd type case.
I also have a Microsoft sticker on the PC with what I think is the serial
number. However no recover software.
I do back up data using the Vista built in programmed, so I guess a
partition is not really that necessary.

Thank you

It looks like you just have the one partition, and not the usual destructive
recovery set.. if you want to partition your drive, take a look at Acronis
Disk Director..
