Parallel port issue

Hi All,
I have this CAD/CAM program that runs fine on NT(old) and W98. It uses a
parallel port security key. Now, and you guessed right, I would like to use
this program on a XP based machine. I understand that XP doesn't allow for
direct acces to a parallel port, so the program does not run without
recognizing the key. Is there some kind of utility that bypasses this
'limitation' and will access the key directly. I have tried UserPort utility
but no luck. The key type is MemoHasp-1. Any comment that shines a light on
this issue is helpfull.

If I am understanding you correctly, you have a security key which inserts
into the parallel port in order for the proprietary software to function. I
had the same problem when I upgraded my new laptop, but with different
software. The new laptops don't automatically come with parallel ports, so
I phoned the software company. The workaround was to purchase a USB key
holder and remove the "brains" (small, round disk) from inside the parallel
key holder and place it in the USB key holder. To my surprise, it worked.
)

Hi,

WinXP does not allow direct hardware access by any program. You need to
contact the program distributor for an alternate solution.

Both Win2K and WinXP do not allow any software applications to
directly address hardware resources, such as serial or parallel ports.
This behavior is by design and is one of the reasons the WinNT family
of operating systems is so much more stable than Win9x. For a hardware
security dongle to work on these operating systems, very specific device
drivers must be provided by the application's manufacturer.

Contact the manufacturer of the application to see if any updates,
patches, or upgrades are available. If the application's manufacturer
will not (or cannot because they no longer exist) provide you with a
patch, new device driver, or product to render this legacy application
Win2K/XP-compatible, you have little choice other than to replace it,
or continue using the OS for which it was designed. Alternatively,
you'll need to acquire a newer version of your application that is
designed specifically for Win2K/XP.

I've got a xp home laptop where userport doesn't seem to work,
and an xp pro box where userport allows me to bitbang the
parallel and serial port with out any problems. Did you try using
the application in win98 compatibility mode? Worse case, set the
box up with win98/xp dual boot.
