Palm Pilot

Pat

I have a Palm Pilot which I synch to my Windows Operating
System. I had Windows 98 and upgraded to Windows Xo. I
have a fiewall installed as well as disabled Windows
Messaging.

The problem that I am having is that since the Palm
Syncing process uses a pop up screen - I can't access it.

Any advise?

Suggest you un-install the Palm software, then reinsall it. There also
is an upgrade available from Palm's web site, should you wish to get a
newer copy. Works on xp no problem.

There was an interesting thread last June in this group (search Google
Groups for "New "Messenger Service" Popup Disabler Free" (without the
outside quotes) ). You've seem to have found the exception that proves
the rule -- the need for the messenger service on a stand-alone
non-networked PC.

Perhaps now you might appreciate the advice -- including that in
Microsoft's KB 330904 -- to stop popup ads you should install a firewall
and NOT turn off Windows Messenger Service.

What makes you think you need Messenger Service to synch a Palm? It has
nothing to do with it. I've had Messenger Service turned off a long time
and Palm synchs just fine. Of course one should have a firewall, but
there's no need for Messenger Service on a standalone pc, certainly not to
synch a Palm. Something else is causing the poster's problem, not the
firewall or Messenger Service.

I'll accept your empirical evidence that Palm Hotsync doesn't use Windows
messenger service or the Alerter. Do you know you Hotsync does work, or have
another suggestion for the OP other than the usual "this is a MS group, go
post your question in a Palm group"?

*snip*

I don't use Messenger. Palm Hotsync works fine for me.. I can't
imagine how it would use Messenger or Alerter. My hunch this is all a
red-herring.

Advice to OP (as stated above): un-install the Palm software and
re-install it. Consider getting the newest version of this software
free for download from www.palm.com. I suspect the root-cause is that
the install didn't survive the upgrade from 98 to XP.
