PAL to NTSC transcode?

Movie Maker appears to be correctly transcoding PAL DV to
NTSC DV when
I save a movie timeline containing PAL DV to a file as DV-
AVI (NTSC)
using the File->'Save Movie File' dialog. Does this sound
right?

If this is right, has anyone evaluated the quality of the
transcode?
My only other PAL->NTSC option is an old Samsung
multisystem VCR which
would involve PAL DV->good analog->fairly crummy digital-
good analog->
NTSC DV.

Also, this particular Movie Maker save process only seems
to work for
relatively short clips. When I try to save/transcode
about 90 minutes
of PAL DV->NTSC DV the save dialog chokes with a
generic "out of disk or
memory or something else message" even though I've got
tons of disk
available (i.e. there's room for another 2 hours of DV on
the disk).
Does anyone know what memory or disk limitations there are
on this
particular transcode?

Thanks,

Stacey

Hi Stacey,

Yes, it sounds right. I haven't seen anyone making comparisons and I'm
interested in what you think about it.

The limitations on how big a project you can have is a memory thing based
on timeline complexity, not a time dimension. But we haven't fully figured
it out yet. Tuning things up gets you further. Defragging your hard drive
helps, and having a well sized virtual swap file also helps. There are some
notes about the saving process on the Problem Solving..... Can't Save a
Movie page of www.papajohn.org - The notes about problems may not apply to
you, but you might be interested in the comments about how the process
works. The Problem Solving.... Checklist also has some info about project
complexity.

PapaJohn,
Since you bought it up, do you have any links that
explain the steps needed to enlarge the WinXP Swap File?

The online Help file is woefully inadequate. In fact, I
cannot find any reference to Swap File at all. Not even
in the Glossary. Must be calling it something different
these days.
