Paid Online Support Only?

Sto Hiya :)

Why is there a charge associated with online Windows XP Support since it is
still part of the 'acfive life cycle of products?'

Also, how do I remove 'Windows Picture and Fax Viewer?' If that is not
possible, how do I make' FastStone Picture Viewer' my default viewer?

Regards

If you mean 'Faststone Image Viewer' then there is a 'settings' on the
tool bar and an 'assications'. Pick the extensions you want associated
with Faststone.

I figured out how to make 'FastStone' my default image viewer without
removing Windows Picture Viewer and Fax.

What I still do no understand is why there is a charge associated with
online Windows XP, IE 7, and Word 2000 Support since they are still part of
the 'active life cycle of products?

When you buy XP, it normally comes pre-installed on your computer.
Companies like Dell, HP, Acer, etc.
They buy cheap licences from MS, in return they have to supply ALL hardware
and Software Support.
If you had retail disk XP, it is still only 3 or 6 months free support from
Microsoft.

If you didn't purchase WinXP (full retail version) and install it on your
computer, support from MS is not free. If WinXP came preinstalled on your
machine, the OEM is the default support source.

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and
e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada. Go to
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=1173 | select "Windows
XP" then select "Windows XP Service Pack 3"

Disable Picture and Fax Viewer
Start/Run: regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll

Or...

Disable or Restore Picture and Fax Viewer (Line 80)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

If you disabled the fax/picture viewer by using regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll,
then changing user icons fail to work: You need to re-load the dll and it
will work. Have only tried this w/ XP Pro. Reload by typing in regsvr32
shimgvw.dll.

Hi Summer1,

Yes, things have definitely changed since the mid-90s when I worked at a
Microsoft Product Support Services' call center.

Back then, support for virtually all MSFT software products was free. It
only cost the customer the charge of a long distance phone call to
Washington state -- this was before the advent of unlimited Long Distance
phone calls -- but there was no charge for support. Nor, was there any such
concept of 'a product's 'active life cycle.'

I started out supporting MS Word. Back in 1994, Word 6.0 for Windows
(versions a, b and c) had just come out, but there were many calls that I
took involving Word 2.0 and even quite a few for Word 1.0

The same held true for the other Office Products as well as the various
Operating Systems.
