pagefile.sys ?? legit ??

pagefile.sys
Is this a legitimate windows file ? When I do a search it
comes up with nothing but it shows when I do a virus scan .

I get this message when running NOD32

C:\pagefile.sys - error opening (file locked)[4]

I am at the moment getting bombarded by emails containing virus
and will be deleting my email account shortly. I have just done
a clean install after getting a new hard drive and didnt have a virus
scanner up and running ( but I didn't open any attachments )

Now I have also found pagefileconfig.vbs with looks suspicious

any help appreciated

thx

This is a file windows needs. This file is your virtual memory, a big
zip-file if you want. So if a virus is detected in it, you've got some
windows-files which are infected = not good. Sure, you can disinfect the
files, but they will be overwritten from the page-file. So the most accurate
thing to do is: format and make sure your files are backed up!

btw, pagefileconfig.vbs is indeed suspicious. You might consider removing
that one.

My error in he message. It doesn't show as a virus just shows
that this file cannot be opened to check for virus which I found
strange as in other virus checkers in the past I have not had this
message for WinXP

I might just do the safe thing but will leave it for a couple of days

Of course it can't be opened. And your vbs is legit.
