In the root folder I have files pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys both aproaching 1G in size. What are they?

one is the virtual memory that windows uses.

The other is the storage file for hibernation. If you never use hibernation
you can turn it off in the power settings and it will disappear.

Pagefil.sys is Win2K's "Virtual Memory."

Hiberfil.sys is Win2K's hibernation file, used in many power
saving schemes.
