Pagefile custom size won't stick

Hello,

I'm having a problem with my pagefile settings. Everytime I try to
shrink the 1150mb pagefile windows automatically sets (768mb ram
*1.5), to something smaller using the 'custom pagefile' size it won't
remember the setting the next time I boot (and yes I am pressing the
set button). I have tried disabling it, rebooting deleting it(it
wasen't there- and hidden files are on)and rebooting once again then
setting the custom pagefile as others have suggested me to do but
didnt work. I also tried adjusting the setting for 'clearpagefile' on
shutdown and that was also unsuccessful. Using a combination of the
two above techniques, I succeeded in having it show up at the correct
size, but upon reboot, it was back to 1150mb. One thing that does work
is if I set the custom pagefile to my second partition, but I read
that it would perform better if left on c:. This has been really
bugging me, and what annoys me even more, is that it used to work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Marc

I am sure that WinXP is smarter than I am when it comes to memory management
of it's own system.
That is why I do not force any sizes myself.
You'd better do that too.

Further to Alec's suggestiosn, having pressed 'set' are you also
pressing 'OK' all the way back up the menu tree - there are 1001 (I
exaggerate slightly) opportunities to press 'cancel', or just 'X' close
the windows, and most of those will drop the change. If you did it
right, WinXP will often tell you that it needs to reboot to complete the
change (not always in the case of expanding the VM size).
