Page numbering

I am still unable to start page numbering on third page of my document. I
have read the suggested article, but it is not totally step-by-step so I'm
still not getting the proper results. I've tried inserting section breaks,
page breaks, you name it. I've even called in our IT guys and they are
unsuccessful. Please help! This is for a journal article by my boss and
must be submitted soon.

1. Insert a section break at the top of the 3rd page.
2. View > Header and Footer
3. You will see a toolbar (floating or anchored, depending on your own
settings). The first button on this toolbar says "Insert Autotext". The
button to its right is a number sign. Position your cursor where you want
the page number to appear and click this number button.
4. Two buttons further to the right, you will see a button that looks like
a hand pointing at a number sign. This is to format page numbers. Click it.
5. The dialog box which appears will allow you to select the numbering
STYLE (roman, arabic etc) as well as whether to continue numbering from the
previous section or to "start at." Click this radio button and set the
numbering to start at 1.

Note: If you need lowercase roman numerals for a table of contents at the
beginning of your boss's paper, you also want to look FURTHER to the right
for a button that looks like two pieces of paper connected by a dotted line.
This button is used to link the headers and footers between sections. By
default, it is selected. If you need different types of numbers or different
text in the footers for each section you want to click this button and
DESELECT IT. This will break the link so that you can have i,ii, iii in the
table of contents and 1, 2, 3 in the body of the paper.

Hope this helps.

You can insert a next-page section break at the end of page 2. Do _not_ use
Insert > Page Numbers, use the header/footer toolbar instead. Take a look at
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Numbering/PageNumbering.htm. For even more,
see http://gregmaxey.mvps.org/Page_Numbering.htm.

Thank you kindly, Ann. I have finally accomplished the task. I appreciate
the clear-cut steps you gave me, and I will definitely try out some of the
online training.

Thanks again,
Kate
