Page Layout With Columns

I want to have a two column page with different formatting for each column.
I also want to be able to swith the curserfrom one column to the other and
type anywhere in the selected column. But my column layout requires me to
type to the bottom of the first column before the cursor will move to the
second column.
How can I do the page layout I want?
Thanks in advance.

It is possible to Insert a Column Break to jump to the top of the next
column.

What do you mean by different formatting for each column?

An alternative to Word's newspaper-style columns would be a borderless table
with two-columns. Can't tell from your description whether that would be
better for you.

Don't use the "columns" feature, use a table instead. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/UsingColumns.htm.
