Page cannot be displayed

I am getting the "Page cannot be displayed" message imbedded in my web pages
where advertisements and banners would normally be. I can pretty much browse
to any web site but the error message will show up in portions of the web
page that seem to be third party advertisements.

I am running the MS firewall, Spy Sweeper, and Norton Anti-virus. But with
all these disabled I still have the problem.

Any help will be apprecitaed.

Turn off your popup blocker.

Thanks Frank for your quick reply... I actually had tried turning the pop-up
blocker off and still the same problem exists. This is something that just
started happening without an apparent cause.

Spy Sweeper won't catch everything (new ones come out so fast).
CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs ,
download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

See
Dealing with Unwanted Malware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

OK... I ran CW Shredder, SpyBot, Spy Sweeper, and Ad-Aware. A few things were
found and corrected but the problem still persists. I downloaded and ran
HiJackThis per the instructions on the Tom Coyote web site and the following
error occurs during the 023 – NT Services portion of the scan… an error log
is never generated.

AppName: hijackthis.exe AppVer: 1.99.0.0 ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 0000316c

I have also posted a message on Tom Coyote web site but it has not received
any responses.

An interesting note regarding the problem, one web page where the problem
occurs is on the Yahoo home page. The Yahoo logo .gif located in the top
center of the page does not load, instead there is a box with a red X in it.
The Yahoo logo URL is http://us.a1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/ww/beta/y3.gif and
another working image has the URL as
http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/ww/bt1/125.gif. Note the difference of
us.a1 versus us.i1. If I change the a1 portion of the non working URL to i1,
the correct Yahoo image shows up in the browser window.

It's two different icons, but I get both of them, the second page giving two
stacks of coins with a crooked arrow superimposed on them.

Most of the contents of this page are from Don Varnau and Mike Burgess

There are many possible causes and solutions.
Try the quick, easy fix first. Clear the IE cache from IE> Tools> Internet
Options> General> Delete files and Delete offline content. Reset the TIF
folder size to about 50MB (Settings button) and clear it occasionally.

Additional information from Mike Burgess:

Are you using a Firewall or "filtering software"?

Several of these are known to cause problems:
1) Zone Alarm Pro [Private Header Info - enabled?]
Reset "Ad Blocking" and "Cookie Control" to "medium"
"Mobile Code Control" = Off

2) Symantec (ISS\NIS)[Enable Browser Privacy - enabled]
Active Content - "Allow All Script To Execute"
Problem: some sites cannot detect the 128 bit encryption
Solution: Completely remove and reinstall NIS.

3) Any "ad blocking" software that blocks "http_referrer"
or contains entries that are blocking access to the desired site.

4) HOSTS file that contains entries that are blocking access to the desired
site.

5) Cookie blocking software that are blocking "required" Cookies.

6) Pop-up blockers that are stripping header\url info.

7) WebWasher Standard Filter/URL Filter

8) Make sure the following registry entry is not corrupt:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings]
"User Agent"="Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Win32)"

Note: "Win32" = Windows 98\ME
Other versions = (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0;)

To check your "User Agent":
Paste the below into the Address Bar and view the output:

javascript:navigator.userAgent

[Example WinME output]
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98; Win 9x 4.90)

I just had the same problem. Posted a topic ("IE6 - In Page
Advertisements wont' display (Page not found)")
and had it solved by looking at the entries in my HOST file.

Search for the HOSTS file, edit with notepad and change as needed.
--or-- simply rename it temporarily and see if the ads show.
Worked like a charm - Many thanks to Ramesh (MS MVP'er)
