"page cannot be displayed"

M

Mark Thiele

I have recently installed IE 6.0, am using Windows98 SE,
and also just changed ISP's including going to cable from
a 56k modem. Mostly everything works fine but with a few
pages I use regularly I get the message "the page cannot
be displayed" with various reasons why this might be
happening. None of which seem helpful. At the bottom it
says cannot find serve or DNS error. This even happens if
I try a simple page like google.com

I also have Nortons sytemworks operating including the
personal firewall. Have reset everything back to defult
settings on the browser but still the same result.

Help!

Did you get a response to this yet? I am trying to
figure out similar issues. I can get to some pages but
not others. I want to know if it has anything to do with
encryption because on one machine is says cipher:0 and
another says cipher: 128. I don't know how to change
that value though.

Check for a file named HOSTS with no extension (not Hosts.sam). It may be a
hidden file. Open it with Notepad and remove any line referencing the site.
Or, rename HOSTS to OLDHOSTS

Then eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page:

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.

I have attempted your fixes, to no avail.

I have re-installed the OS, flashed the BIOS, and re-
installed all Updates via Windows Update. I continue to
have the same result.

Known affected sites are:

http://osap.gov.on.ca

Comp Config:

Processor: Intel Pentium M
Unit: Dell Inspirion 500m
Anti-Virus: Norton Anti-Virus 2003
Firewall: Norton Internet Security
Memory: 128MB
OS: Windows XP Home
IE: Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1

Any suggestions as to what I can do now?
