Subject: Problems w/ the Microsoft site
From: "Pat" <[email protected]> Sent:

I'm having trouble w/ the MS site. When I click on 2
successive links, I get the following message:

msxml3.dll error '80072f76'

The requested header was not found

/library/toolbar/3.0/vb.asp, line 34

As an example, if I start on the home page, click on
windows, then click on windows xp, a white screen appears
with the error message.

I'm not sure if this is related or not; when I go to
Downloads there is a button for the "next 45". When I
click on this button, it changes colors but nothing else
happens. No additional downloads.

There are a few other sites where I run into problems with
links. But, in general, I rarely have problems with any
other sites.

My system is an XP SP1 Home edition. I'm using IE 6.0
SP1. I also get the same results on Netscape 7.1.

Any ideas?

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

Here is a fix that found in a previous message.

Here is what I found to fix it, when using Norton.
I use a french version so terms may differ a little
Check C:\Program Files\Norton Personal Firewall or Internet
Settings\notes.txt
Go to NPF or NIS Options/Web Content/global settings => information
about your browser.
I hope this will help as many people seem to experience this problem.

Pat,

Learn how to search for news threads with Google Groups.

You can find your thread as follows. (You may want to press Ctrl-N first
so you can still read this while performing these steps.)
1. Copy the following link into your Address bar and click Go.
http://groups.google.com/
2. Enter in the search field:
msxml3 author:pat insubject:problems group:microsoft.*.ie6.browser
3. Click on View Thread...

Also, FYI there is a newer web interface than the one you are using.
Use the following link to open a portal to the IE6 newsgroups:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/support/newsgroups/default.asp#section1

PA Bear's post is available on the new web interface but it is harder to find
using it. Usually though, the search there is better than the search
on the web interface that you are using. In order to find your first post
what I had to do was use your timestamp as a manual index and page
backwards through the list. Doing that I found it on page 5; so for you
to find it again you could start there and continue paging back if necessary.
Unfortunately the new web interface is rather deficient IMO because it
doesn't show the timestamp (only the date) in the message list pane.
This forces us to open the first message in the last thread on each page
just in order to figure out what the time range is for the page we are viewing.
The old web interface at least showed the full date and timestamp
(in timezone PST).

Please notice also the links on that portal page labelled
"Open with newsreader". Unless you are forced to use the web
interface to newsgroups I strongly suggest that you try using them.
Once you get used to using a real NNTP newsreader you will
find it much easier than continuing to use either of the web interfaces.
BTW You should actually be able to use those links without following
the instructions on the page linked to by the label
"Newsgroup Setup Instructions"
but in order to post you should do some personalizing first.
The setup instructions don't mention it but it is a good idea
to use a fake or throwaway E-mail address to avoid subjecting
your real E-mail address to unwanted mail.

Thanks!!!!
