P4PE Memory problems.

Hi,
I have a P4PE main board and I'm using two double-sided 512Mb DDR333. The
problem is that, if I use only one DDR on bank 1 everything works fine. If I
install the second DDR on bank 2 the windows XP becomes very unstable. I
tried these memory modules in other computers but with different main boards
at it works fine. Does anyone know about any compatibility problems with
this board? I'm already using the latest bios version.

Thanks for all the help.

Get a copy of memtest86, as using Windows OS as a means of detecting
memory problems is asking for trouble. Memtest is much better at
detecting memory problems than the OS is. When the standard tests
are clean, you can enable the extended tests, which help test that
the memory bus itself if functioning properly (Vtt noise problems).

You may need to set the memory timings manually. I think Sandra has a
module (the copy I've got, the SPD module runs from a DOS prompt), and
it can read the SPD on the DIMM, and it will tell you the memory timings
the memory can accept. I think there is another utility called CPU-Z,
that dumps the current memory settings being used by the hardware, if you
want to simply back off on the current settings a bit. (Take the CPU-Z
value and slow down the timings by one and retest.) I've never used
CPU-Z, so I don't know where to download it.

So, I'd try tuning the memory before declaring there is a problem.

Sometimes changing the voltage on the memory can help a bit.
In the BIOS, there is a "DDR Reference Voltage" setting you can
play with. The values are [2.9V] [2.7V] [2.6V] [Auto]. You could
try 2.6 or 2.7, but depending on what the voltage really is on the
board, the 2.9V setting might affect the long term reliability of the
memory. Some vendors will tell you what the maximum voltage is for
their DIMMs.

Happy tweaking,
Paul

Had same problem when went from 512 to 1024 memory (from 1 to 2x512 sticks).
Change memory mode from Turbo back to normal in BIOS - - problem solved.
See if that helps - - -

Going from Turbo to Normal also helped me with 2 512MB Crucial DDR333.
But why? Is there a problem with the BIOS or the chipset itself?
Why should we have to sacrifice performace when increasing our memory?

I had problems with any bios later than 1002........With 1002 all is well,
at least here. The later bios' gave me problems with turbo mode and gave me
errors in memtest. I don't know why either.

I've just tried to "downgrade" the BIOS from 1005 to 1002 and switched on
the turbo mode, it did NOT work. :-(

Have any one been in contact with Asus about this?

I've tried to change the System Performance setting to Optimal (instead of
Turbo) and managed to keep the memory turbo enabled. The question is: which
setting to have in turbo mode for best performance?

I also had problems with 2 double sided 512meg sticks in the P4PE. I found
that 1 double sided in bank-0 and a single in bank-1 and/or bank-2 worked
just fine.

I don't know if I'm the only one interested, but I've managed to get my
config with 2x 512MB to work perfect with the 003 beta of the 1006 version
of the beta.

Just to let you know.
