P4C800 E- Deluxe won't post -

I put together this system last night and when it first came up it said, "
Overclocking failed ! Hit F1 to setup or F2 to load defaults." I didn't
think much of it and hit F2 for "load defaults" and rebooted and nothing
came up...black screen. I waited and turned it off and on and after 10
minutes i got the post screen. I installed XP fine after that and it ran
fine untill the next morning when it wouldn't come on again and when it did
it said the same thing again, " Overclocking failed...run setup or load
defaults. I did the 1014 bios update via the afudos bios utility and it was
successfull. The power supply is 400 watts. The settings are all "standard
or normal"...i'm not overclocking at all. The ram is pc3200 Kingston and
with memtest, it test's fine..no errors. When i shut the surge protector off
it seems to do this. When there's power thru the cord, ..the trickle.. it
doesn't do it. Is the fan not seating the cpu, battery dead, or board
faulty? (2.6c cpu..Ati 7000 agp)

Thanks. -L

The recent mobo is quite picky. Even when I change the case, sometimes it
does not boot. So I took out everything, re-attached to case, etc., and for
hours
nothing happened. After 3 times, anyway it booted.

Make sure cables, PCI cards, video card, everything is firmly seated, check
your power cords. That's all. I already built about 20 PCs, but experience
is not a guarantee that things will work.

If you are using the Intel stock heatsink and fan you may experience a
problem caused by downwards pressure on the motherboard. This causes two
solder areas beneath the cpu cradle to bridge over. The problem is well
documented on the ASUS forums. My advice is to try a Zalman cooler or
something similar. Those Intel coolers are shite!

Hi Alan,
I have exactly the same problem with mine. It seems strange that it
only effects the BIOS/boot up. It keeps losing the BIOS settings, says
I'm over clocking when I'm not etc. Once booted (about 1 in 10 times)
it's fine. Ran all the various 'burn in tests', SETI, Prime95, Sandra
etc - all without problems.

I'm sending mine back and getting another.

I'm using an intel cooler.

Any reccomendations for a replacement cooler? (recommendations vary
between the zalman & the alpha. Supposedly the alpha doesn't use the
asus heat sink retainer - does the zalman).

Also some posts say this has been fixed with a revision 2 motherboard -
not sure how you spot one of those..

TIA

I've used the zalman cu-7000 on about 3 systems so far - all p4c800 boards,
with great success, combined with the 'cermaique' thermal paste I dropped
full load temps from 58-59c to 42-43c.

Hi Zander,
I ordered one today, together with a replacement P4C800-E (the 'old'
ones being sent back next week..)

TIA

<<The ram is pc3200 Kingston>> Which Kingston? The ones listed in the QVL
(Qualified Vendors List) Page 2-12 in the Users Guide?
My experience with this board is that it is very unforgiving which memory is
used. I've paid 2 restocking fees already (HyperX and XMS3200LLPT) I've got
Apacer on order now which is in the QVL, the other two weren't.

So Bill, ..isn't it possible to specify the revision two board upon rma-ing
back? I'm confused what to do as this was supposed to be for Xmas for a
family and now this.. There's many suggestions here. I built one these last
August with no problem. Again, ..today i left the surge protector on and
went out for 5 hours. Upon returning the computer booted right up. Tonight i
pulled the cord out of the back and went out for 3 hours and when i came
back and plugged the cord back in i got nothing....black screen. Different
battery didn't help either. Can't keep buying fans and coolers. The design
configuartion should work, we shouldn't have to redesign it. Wonder about
the ram suggestion though...mine's the Kingston 3/256 and not the 3A/256 at
the Qvl list with Asus.

Hi LB,
I'm RMA'ing it back to NewEgg. I'll get whatever stock they have in. As
it's about 1 month since I got my first one, if there is such a thing as
a 'revision 2' board, I'll end up getting one.

I've also bought a Zalman fan to see if it avoids the 'problem' with
the standard Intel fan. If the new one doesn't work within a few days,
I'll RMA it and get an ABIT or Gigabyte
