P4C-800E Deluxe & RAID

Peter

I'm planning to use an Asus P4C-800E Deluxe in a PC I'm building (my
first). I'm going to use two Western Digital 250GB SATA drives in RAID 0
configuration. I would also like to have a third hard drive which is not
part of the RAID.

1. Can the P4C-800E handle the third drive (I assume yes).

2. Can the third drive be SATA or will the two RAID drives use up all of
the S-ATA connections on the P4C-800E?

Thanks.

Yes, you can hook 4 SATA drives, 4 ATA100 and 2 ATA133 (non ATAPI ) devices
to this board at the same time.

No, you can use SATA1 & 2 for normal SATA drives, and use SATA_RAID1 & 2 for
the RAID.

Thanks for your reply but I'm confused.

I'm planning to use two Western Digital SATA drives for the RAID. I
assume any SATA drives will work. True?

I also want a third drive not part of the RAID. Can it be a SATA drive?

Do I have to do anything to the drives themselves to make the first two
compatible with RAID 0 or is that done entirely by the RAID controller on
the motherboard?

Maybe another way of asking this question would be: how do I tell the
system which two drives to use for RAID 0 and which drive is non RAID?

Its done by the controller.

You would connect the 2 SATA drives you wished to use in a RAID to the SATA
RAID headers (there are two of them) and then connect the non-raid SATA
device to the non-raid sata headers.

See, SATA is single device per channel. Each cable terminates at the drive,
unlike IDE with 2 devices per channel.
