P4 --> AMD upgrade options, (again..)

Hi,

I wrote a bit higher in this NG about upgrade options. I have parts
lying around here, and I am ready to buy a few new ones in order to
build 2 machines.

One machine is assembled with an ASUS P4P800 mobo (i865P, AGP, DDR),
with X800XT (AGP), 1 GB Corsair RAM and P4 3.2, S478 obviously.

Then there are parts for a second slower machine, a Linux file and web
server.

However, I could use the above mentionned Asus mobo and P4 3.2 CPU for
the Linux machine with cheap RAM and gfx card, and keep the good AGP
card and memories to use with for example an Athlon 4400+, and an EPoX
9NDA3I (nForce3 250, AGP, DDR) for the faster machine.

Would that make sense ? The fast machine is needed for gaming (FS2004
mostly). Would the Athlon here on the nforce 3 chipset provide more
computing power as needed by the game, than the P4 on the i865P chipset ?

Still haven't decided what to buy...

Absolutely. It'll trounce the P4. AMDs beat P4's in every single gaming
benchmark there is.
