Can anyone please help ?
On my home PC - i'm using Vista sp2 home premium 32 bit

Vista doesn't load up - i get this message
"status : oxc000014c"
"info : windows failed to load"
"because system registry file is missing or corrupt"

it won't start in safe mode or start with last good config
it says insert vista disc and restart to repair
when i try to do this it starts to load from the CD, the screen changes to a
green and blue background image, the mouse pointer appears, but no text or
menus appear.

it never reaches the repair screen as pictured in the link below

The final version of Vista SP2 is not yet released. The only thing currently
available is a release candidate (RC). Meaning, the software might very well
be unstable and completely screw up your computer. I'm not saying that the
RC is to blame, I'm just pointing out that on a machine with 'important
files' (which you should have backuped anyway), you shouldn't run non-final
software.

That said, what was the last thing you did before it crashed?

If you want to recover your files, you might want to put your disc in a
second, working, machine and copy the files from the disc before trying to
do any drastic repairing which might overwrite (part of) your data.

Hi Eno--

1) When you say it won't start in safe mode, I'm not sure what you mean.

F8's Win Advanced Options menu has 3 opportunities to use SM for system
restore. You should try everyone of them because one might work when others
do not.

SM
SM with networking
SM with command prompt

At the prompt you would type the command to use for
system restore at the safe mode cmd prompt is:

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

You haven't exhausted all your options until you've tried all of them.

2) Try getting to startup repair again after cleaning that DVD by putting
drops of cleaning solution on with a cloth and cleaning from the center out.
It might be your DVD needs cleaning.

3) You have another option provided the DVD is cleaned and works--you can
put in the DVD and do a repair install by doing an inplace upgrade. You
elect to install, then after the language screen you select upgrade and
install on the same partition/drive where you have the OS now. I've done
them and they work. You lose nothing.
