Owner account question

My parents have a laptop with an eom version of Win XP Home edition. They
are using Norton Internet Security 2003. Somehow the Intrusion Detection
feature was turned off, possibly by spyware or a virus. When I attempt to
turn this on, I get a message: “Failed to save settings. Please verify that
your Windows account is not restricted.â€

There have never been any additional accounts created on this machine. When
you log in, the blue screen shows “Owner†as “computer administer.†We have
to click on the owner icon, which does not require a password, to log into
windows. If there are no other accounts, and we are logged in under owner,
it seems that we should be able to turn on the intrusion detection.

We have added any accounts, but an account has magically appeared. It’s
called “ ASP NET Machine A…†Control panel (user accounts) says it’s a
limited account with password protection. I wonder if any of this could be
part of the problem? I’m a little afraid to log out and log back in to see
if there is a password hint because I’m afraid I won’t be able to log in as
owner again.

Today I removed some spyware with the AOL spyware protection tool. The
culprit was called Outwar, which is called a Rogue Activex. Prior to this I
removed to viruses, adware.lop and download.adware.lop. I believe these two
have to do with the large amount of popups they were getting, even though
they have a popup blocker. I give this info a background to what I did
today. I don’t know how long the spyware and viruses were on the machine.

The question remains. How can I fix the owner account so it will let me
turn on the intrusion detection?

Your help is appreciated.

LOGIN is only required for a network.

DO youmean the user selection screen with user name [Owner] which appears at
startup.

Your parents should have full control of Norton's from the Owner sign-on.

Anyhting less may mean that there are still some nasties hanging around.

Download and run Spybot Search and Destroy to ensure all of them are deleted.

Als tell you folks to be aware of accepting any item that wants to be
installed in order to view or browse a site..a sure sign of a problem in the
making.

These usually are offered by porn sites, tell your dad to clean up his act!
