OVERTYPE MODE!

For as long as I can remember, Microsoft products like Word and Outlook
constantly slip, inadvertently, into OVERTYPE mode. It is really annoying.
You'll be typing along, then look at the page and realize you've typed over a
bunch of stuff that you wanted to keep. Then you realize the app has
'slipped' into overtype mode for no apparent reason. This happens when
typing emails or word docs.

The remarkable thing is that this phenomenon continues to happen even with
the latest microsoft products. Bill Gates must use his own stuff. Why
doesn't he have his guys fix this finally? It must drive him nuts as much as
anyone else.

Can anyone explain this? Am I the only one this happens to? Is there a way
to fix?

I've been using Word and such since 4.2 and never seen the problem you
describe.

Why oh why are you blaming software for your clumsily smashing the INS key
while typing?

Okay, well it's good to know that this is not a common problem. I don't know
why I have this problem. I don't even see an INS key. Do you mean the
'Insert' key? It's so out of the way, I don't think there's anyway I'm
accidentally hitting the 'Insert' key all these years. Strange.....

I have a tendency to accidentally hit the insert key when I reach
for the backspace key. For that reason I have it turned off so
that key doesn't do anything at all. There are a number of
freeware programs that can do this, such as sMaRTcaPs at
http://www.phoebusllc.com/.

I also use it to turn off the Caps Lock key, which I have a
tendency to hit when reaching for tab.

Stop hitting the <Insert> key accidentally.
