Over time Word 2003 launches 1st doc slowly

I use Word 2003 with the latest service pack. I have Goldmine macros and
Adobe 8 macros loaded. I also use a few small macros which I wrote myself.
One of them simply prints the page I’m working with.

Over time I notice that Word begins launching docs more slowly. What used to
take less than 1 second starts taking up to 4-5 seconds, or more. I had the
foresight to backup my normal.doc file. When I replace the normal.doc file
with a fresh (identical) copy, Word speeds up a lot, only to slow down over
the next few days.

If I have a Word doc open, subsequent docs open very quickly, even when the
Word is in it’s “slow†mode.

My theory is that Word is trying to do something with the Internet and/or
Adobe. I have no clue what though. I would like to understand what is causing
the performance hit.

Does anyone have a suggestion for me?

I have some more information:

I use Word as my e-mail editor in Outlook. I must because the latest upgrade
to Office blew away the autocorrect feature in Outlook. If I am running
Outlook my Word docs launch very quickly. If I am not running Outlook my Word
docs take up to 10 seconds to launch, at least the first doc I launch. It is
pretty clear that there is a relationship between Word and Outlook that is
causing Word to behave poorly if Outlook is not running.
