Outlook XP/2002 opens and then closes automatically

I have been running Outlook XP with Windows Vista for 6 months with no
problems. Last week I opened outlook, it opened to inbox screen and then
closed down. I have tried repairing Office XP, tried reinstalling Office XP
but nothing works. Outlook continues to open and then close automatically.
Does anyone know what the problem is and how I can solve it? I have emails
saved that I need to get to. Thanks, Lisa.

See if you can open Outlook in Safe mode.
Type outlook.exe /safe in the Windows Run box.
It might be a message in the Inbox that is selected and Outlook can't
preview. If you can open Outlook in Safe mode then delete the first item in
your Inbox and try again.

This might also be a corrupt profile so try a new profile via the Mail icon
in Control Panel. If that works open your old PST file via File | open and
copy data to the new PST.

Thanks Bill, but neither of these two solutions worked. Outlook won't open in
Safe mode - just opens and closes automatically as in normal mode. I also
opened a new profile as suggested, but it still opens and closes
automatically. Any other ideas? Lisa.

Try a selective Windows startup - disable everything that runs on start and
see if Outlook runs. If it does then something that is starting up conflicts
with Outlook. You can add each service back to try and determine which.
Other than that you have tried everything. Uninstalling than deleting Office
directories and reinstalling might work.,

Thanks Bill. This didn't work either. I decided to download and use Windows
Mail instead Outlook. Mail allowed me to import all my messages from Outlook
so I have access to them. So I solved the problem by going around the
problem. Lisa.

Shame it wasn't fixed. If you decide you want to try again in the future
post a new thread.
