Outlook wont open, process running

J

Jameson

Good to know. I'm using the web access, so I see all the posts at once.

Typical symptoms include: not opening when clicked, because the process is
already running. Continue to receive email messages, the new mail icon shows
up in the task bar. When the program is exited, it doesn't actually exit -
the process OUTLOOK.exe still runs in the background. I can manually exit
Outlook through the task manager, and then start it with no problem. If there
are more than one instance of the Outlook process, and I close them both, the
next time I start it I will receive a message that says that it did not close
properly, send info to MS, etc.

I've searched a number of online sites, etc. and these are the solutions
that I have found and tried:

1) Other programs accessing Outlook - disable all add ins. I'm also running
AVg antivirus, so I completely uninstalled that, still had the problem.
2) Automatically deleting Junk and Deleted items - stopped that.
3) Corrupt .PST file - scanned using MS's SCANPST.exe in the Office12
folder, ran as administrator just to be sure.
4) Automatic syncing of RSS feeds - there was a post that described how RSS
feeds synced with IE caused some problems - made sure that they weren't being
synced.

As far as I can tell, Outlook is running all by itself, and still not
shutting down properly. I know that there are utilities and add ins out there
to kill the process as you shut it down, but it shouldn't be necessary to
install a third-party utility just to get a program to close. I'd rather not
add "just one more thing" as a workaround - there are enough of those for MS
- I'd rather find out what the problem is and actually solve it.

Thanks,
Jameson

It's better to figure out why its not closing, instead of crashing it to
make it close. Does it close properly if you start outlook in /safe mode?

It appears to. At least the three times that I tried it it did. It's also not
showing the preview pane when I open it in Safe mode, maybe that has
something to do with it, although I can't see how.

Interestingly enough, it does pop up with a message in the notification area
of the taskbar, saying that "a data file did not close properly last time
outlook was used and is being checked for consistency" every time I open it
in safe mode. Doesn't do this for opening it regularly.

The preview pane is disabled in safe mode. It should show the 'checking
pst' message every time it doesn't close properly, so you should see it most
of the time.

Go to Tools, Trust Center, Addins - what addins are listed? Try disabling
all and see if it works as expected. Re-enable 1 at a time, each time you
restart and see if it works. The Microsoft addins may not be necessary
unless you use exchange or vba and a few people report disabling them help,
so you could try disabling them first.

Don't confuse accounts with profiles. Do you have a single profile
containing both a POP and an IMAP account (i.e., you can see both the
default and the IMAP folders when Outlook runs) or do you have two profiles
(defined in Control Panel>Mail>Show Profiles) with one containing a POP
account and one containing an IMAP account. You'd need to stop and restart
Outlook in order to switch between the profiles.

J

Jameson

Nope, I'm fairly computer savvy - I do in fact mean two profiles. Each
profiles is running a separate account, one POP and one IMAP. I check the
IMAP account on both my business desktop and my personal laptop. The problem
is only on the laptop, 99% of the time with the POP3 account, and never on
the desktop. Both are running Outlook2007.

No active addins are listed. They are all in the "inactive" area. No addins
are listed in the "disabled" section. They were already like this, so I
didn't have to disable anything.
Out of curiosity, these are the ones that are listed:
Bus. Contact mgr
Calendar gadget / sideshow
eDataSecurity Outlook (an Acer thing which I have never used)
MS Access Outlook addin
MS Exchange unified msging
MS Office Sharepoint Server colleague import addin
MS Outlook mobile service
MS VBA for Outlook
Windows Search email indexer

Something else I should be looking for?
