outlook too big - can't archive

My outlook files are huge - I have emails since 2003 and my outlook has
slowed to a crawl

I told it to archive the files, but it seems to not be removing the old
files. Should I check delete old files? I don't want them deleted permanently
in case I have to go back in and find them.

Why not just create some new PSTs and move to them the items you want to
store away?

is there no way to do this automatically? do I really have to go through and
move emails from the last 3 years? I'd rather just fix whatever's broken.

Activate AutoArchive. I have scheduled AutoArchive to run once a month
and archive everything that is older than 3 months. It usually runs at
night when I don't use the computer.

If autoarchive is not moving messages,. then the messages are not as old as
you claim. Autoarchive works on the modified date of an item, not on the
received date. if you move an item from one folder to another, that will
change its modification date and it won't get archived until the interval
since you moved it exceeds the archive interval.

Moreover, moving large numbers of old items is hardly more difficult than
moving one. Sort your items by some date, click the first one in the list
that you wish to move, hold down the shift and click the last one, then
click Edit>Move to Folder. They'll all move at once.
