I was using the trial version of outlook 2003.I saved my contacts and emails
in a pst file. I then uninstalled the outlook 2003 and reinstalled my outlook
2000. When I tried to import my pst information it gives me an error message.
What can I do?

Thanks for the help

Nothing. You can not access that information again until you have an
installation of Outlook 2003. PST files created in Outlook 2003 are not
compatible with earlier installations. Neither are PST files exported from
Outlook 2003.
Was there no warning to that effect when you used the trial version? There
certainly should have been.
If you are not going to purchase Outlook 2003, find a friend who is using
it. You can then open this PST file in their installation. Then while still
in Outlook 2003 you must create a new PST file in "Outlook 97-2002" format
and copy the data into that PST file. You can then open that file in earlier
versions.

I was reading your response and thought you could help me out. I needed to
reinstall my window xp so I backed up my files into a .pst format and saved
them to a disk. Now when I insert the disk I can't open the file. It needs
to know what program created the file in order to open it and so i'm unsure
what to do from there.
Thanks,

You must first move the PST file to your hard drive and remove its read only
attribute.
You then open it from Outlook, using Outlook's File > Open... command.

It would help if you posted, within the origonal thread.
I dont believe you save a pst to earlier format.
You create a new pst in this format
Then if neccessary copy data to this pst, within OL.

Click FIle>New>Outlook Data File>Outlook 97-2002 Personal Folders File
(.pst)>OK. Browse to the folder whet you wish to create it (or accept the
default). Give it a name (or accept the default). Click OK. Now copy the
contents of your Unicode PST to the new one.

Brian,

Let me describe exactly what occurs when I try to copy contacts from my PC
at work (that uses Outlook 2003). I hope that I'm covering every detail.

I follow the instructions given in the help file named "Create a new data
file and move or copy items to it" using the "MS Outlook 97-2002 Personal
Folders File (.pst)" option.

When I perform step 6, a pop-up window appears. It's a "Microsoft Office
Outlook" window. It states, "Creating a new item from selected items could
take some time. Are you sure you want to create a new item from these items?"
It has "yes" and "no" buttons. If I choose the no option, the task is
terminated. If I choose the "yes" option, another "Microsoft Office Outlook"
window appears. It states "Some of these contacts do not have email
addresses. Their names will be used instead. You may need to replace the
names with email addresses." It has "OK" and "Cancel" buttons. I select OK.

After half a minute or so, all of my contact names (or email addresses)
appear in the "to..." line of a new email window. I even tried to "send" the
email, even though I figured this was wrong. The program merely complains
that some of the "adressees" do not have email addresses.

I don't want to create a new email. I'm trying to copy my contacts (and the
contact information) into my newly made contacts folder. (I have saved that
folder onto my PC desktop.)

Why will my contacts not migrate over to the new folder? I've tried the
Edit/Copy to folder option and the Edit/Move to folder option. I've tried to
select all and then copy/paste. Nothing works.

What item were you dragging? Was it the Contacts folder itself? What
happens if you simply right-click the Contacts folder and choose Copy,
giving the new PST as the destination? (You'll have to delete the Contacts
folder you created, but so what?)
After half a minute or so, all of my contact names (or email addresses)
appear in the "to..." line of a new email window.

You're saying that at the end of the Copy operation a Compse window pops up
without you having requested one? I just tried exactly what you say you
did, clicking my original Contacts folder while holding CTRL and dragging it
down the Folder List until I reached my new PST and then letting the button
go. The Contacts folder simply appeared in the new PST with no messages
whatsoever. I have plenty of contacts with no email addresses and plenty
with addresses as well. My new Contacts folder looks exactly like my old
one. I did not get any of the pop-ups you describe.

I was trying to drag the contacts themselves. I had used CTRL + A on some
tries. I had also tried Edit/ Select All (basically the same thing).

Just to be sure, what do you mean by "PST"?

Using the Go / Copy contacts did move them to the new folder. Thanks. Now, I
just need to make those to a jump drive to take home for entry onto my PC
that has Outlook 2000. I hate to be a nuisance, but what's the easiest way to
do that?

Thanks.

Personal Folders File.

Insert the jump drive ni the PC. Start Outlook. Click FIle>Open>Personal
Folders File and browse to the PST on the jump drive. Select it and click
OK. You should see it appear in the Folders List. Open the folder by
selecting it and then copy its contents to the appropriate folder in your
main PST. WHen done, close the PST on the jump drive by right-clicking its
root and choosing Close. Close Outlook before removing the jump drive from
the PC.
