Outlook & pst files are corrupt- best way to reinstall?

I have Office XP Standard for Students & Teachers (2002). My Outlook program
has major problems. First it started closing suddenly and now it won't open
at all. I tried fixing it using scanpst (I think that's what it's called) -
I know the pst file is huge (several GB) since I had accumulated so many
emails. I know I need to reinstall Office so that I can use Outlook again.
What is the best way to do this and is it worth it to salvage the pst file?
It's not that important to me to save the emails or the address book if it's
a lot of money or hassle. Are there other files that are of importance
besides the pst ones?

I appreciate any help I can get!

With Outlook 2002, the PST's maximum size is 2 GB and you often can see
problems when it exceeds 1.5 GB, so saying it's "several" GB is a fairly
indicative sign that is where the problem lies. If so, see this:

Brian,
Thanks for your reply! (I had just posted a response but the website's
server was busy - so if you get this message twice, that's why). Is it still
necessary to reinstall Office in this instance?

Please let me know when you have a chance. I do appreciate it!!!

Reinstalling Outlook would have no effect on whether or not a PST is too
large. No, you don't have to reinstall.

Brian,
Thanks again for your reply - I just tried using the repair tool and it gave
me an error message saying that "you may only use this utility on a PST file
that is at least 1900000000 bytes" - (mine is 1841.56 MB). Is there a way
around this?

Thanks again,

Rachel

Sounds to me like your PST hasn't quite gotten too large. You said that you
"tried fixing it using scanpst.". Did scanpst report any errors? Did it
say it repaired the PST? Have you tried creating a new PST and adding it to
your mail profile as the delivery location?
