Outlook Problem Using VPN

My Outlook works great and then when I hook up to the net through a
VPN everything seems to work except Outlook fails to send any email
messages; the message hang in the Outbox. Outlook will receive emails
with out problems but when Outlook trys to send the message the
following error message appears:

"Sending and Receiving"reported error(0x800CC78)
Unable to send message. Please verify the e-mail address in your
account properties. The server responded: Authentication Required

When I log off of the VPN (Virtual Private Network); the next time
Outlook does it normal "send and receive" the messages in the Oubox
get sent with out any action on my part.

What changes do I have to make in Outlook to use a VPN?

I use windows XP Pro with Office XP Pro 2002.

What kind of e-mail account are you using? Are you using the VPN to connect
to an office mailserver or do you just POP your mail from an ISP?

If I understand your question I just POP my mail form my ISP. I run
this system from my home and I used to just hook to my ISP but now I
am using a VNP with encription to get to my ISP. It is only when I use
the VPN to get to my ISP that Outlook will not send my messages out.

I guess I should have also stated that I use a "POP3" and "SMPT" email
account in Outlook 2002.

That happens alot because ISPs are cracking down on the spread of viruses.
They block the port you want to use (25 for SMTP). If you VPN into your
office typically you wont get blocked because your gateway to the internet
becomes the gateway from your office. Goto http://www.whatismyip.com before
and after you connect your VPN to see what your gateway IP address is....

I knew that the IP's would be different That is why I am initializing
a connection on a VPN from a vendor. The idea is to use their IP when
I am surfing the web, etc. This way I hope to keep my real IP from all
those unscrupulous people on the net that get my IP any time they
want. I am not sure how that would affect the SMTP function as I have
to go thru my ISP to get to the VPN from the vendor. Everything else
seems to work perfectly except the SMTP function in Outlook. Could you
explain more if there is more for me to know.

I'm not clear on why you need the VPN for this then. Why not just POP the
mail directly over your Internet connection?

I was hoping to be able to just initialize the VPN connection on
startup and just run al network traffic thru the VPN instead of having
to initialize the VPN as applications ditate. Sue would make it a lot
easier and the only application I have a problem with is Outlook and
it is just the SMTP function of Outlook that does not work properly.

I was hoping that there was some setting in Outlook that would fix
this problem.

If the SMTP works fine without the VPN connected then the problem is really
with the VPN and your office network -- maybe a default gateway issue or a
DNS resolution problem. Could also be that the ISP is refusing SMTP
connections from your office network's IP address.

What if you configure your VPN to NOT use the default gateway on the remote
connection -- that way Outlook (and IE) will just use your local Internet
connection to do their thing but any office applications will still be able
to connect via the VPN to your office.

Can you do SMTP without the VPN connected?

Does your office block SMTP?

Yes, that is the frustrating part of this thing. Everything in Outlook
works perfectly until I hook up VPN. Today if I want to send mail I
dis-connect the VPN and send the mail then go back to VPN and
everything except SMTP works great. Receiving mail is no problem. All
my other applications work fine including Internet Explorer.

I am not using this to connect to my literal working office. I have nt
office I m retired and using thisVPN for stealth reasons.

I don't really have any reason to "stealth" my SMPT transmissions. I
was just trying to find a way to be able to set my system in one mode
and have it work for every thing with out having to go back and forth,
I definitely want to stealth the IE transactions due to the fact the
IP address is out in the open for anyone to harvest.

Shouldn't have to do any back and forth. When you're at the office your
SMTP/POP works thru the office connection, yes? When you're at home it
works thru your home Internet connection, yes?

As for stealthing your IE stuff usually a NAT box is perfectly sufficient
