Outlook Not Responding

Hi
My outlook 2007 has stopped working for some reason. When i try to open it,
it gets as far as the blu screen, however it then freezes and none of the
folders on the left are populated. I have to open task manager to close it
down. i am given the message outlook is not responding.

i have tried creating a new profile. i have uninstalled and re-installed
the programme. Any help would be much appreciated. I have had to resort to
using outlook express to get to my emails, however, this is set using french
as the default language, and it wont let me change it. I dont know if this
is part of the problem or not.

Many thanks in anticipation of your help.

Please check your application event viewer for any Office-related errors.
Please relay the eventID and source.

Also, try to open Outlook in safe mode (Start > Run > outlook.exe /safe to
see if it will stay open then. You can try a detect and repair from the Help
menu.

You may also want to try to repair your PST since perhaps that's corrupted
and the cause of the problem.

You can also rename the following files to see if they are the problem (they
will recreate when Outlook opens):

outcmd.dat
frmcache.dat
the .srs file
extend.dat

In order to see the above files, you will have to unhide hidden files and
folders. Use Windows Explorer to do this.

Good luck and let me know how you make out.

Hi

Thanks for your response.

I have tried to open outlook in safe mode but this does exactly the same and
freezes at the same point. I have also done the detect and repair, and i
receive a message saying that repair has been sucesful, however, this does
not fix the problem.

With regards to renaming the files and checking the event viewer, im afraid
i am not that technically aware and would not know how to do this. Sorry for
sounding stupid, but any help would be great.

Many thanks

Hi Brent,

Not a problem, I'll give you more details. In order to unhide hidden files
and folders, open Windows Explorer. You can do this by right-clicking on My
Computer and scrolling to Explore or right-click on the Start Button and
scroll to Explore.

From there look for the menu buttons (File, Edit, etc.). Click on Tools >
Folder options. Then click on the View tab. In that list you want to check
the following item:

Show hidden files and folders

And uncheck the following item:

Hide file extensions for known file types

Click the Apply button and then the Like Current Folder button before
clicking OK.

Then you can search for the files you want to rename: Start > Search > For
files and folders. Enter outcmd.dat, extend.dat, *.srs, frmcache.dat (just as
I've typed it, with commas inbetween. The click the Search Now button.

To find your Application Event Viewer, you can right-click on My Computer
and scroll to Manage, look for the Event Viewer and expand it. You'll see
Application, Security, and System. Highlight Application and look for red
errors in the corresponding pane.

Another way to find your Event Viewer is to click on Start > Run and then
type: "eventvwr" in the box (without the quotes) and then click OK.

I hope this helps you start out. Keep me posted.

Did you unhide hidden files and folders first?

The usual location of the files is:

C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

or

C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Hi Kathleen,

I searched the Internet for ages after coming across a 'not responding'
message from a trial version of Outlook 2007 which was driving me crazy.
Every time I tried to log on to my hosted exchange server Outlook froze.

Followed your advice and it worked brilliantly. Thank you very much Kathleen!
